Introduction and Interests:

Hello, my name is Edward Steltenpohl, and I am a Mathematical Sciences graduate student at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee. My alma mater is UW-Parkside, where I earned a B.S., magna cum laude, in mathematics and political science. I am a Wisconsin native and have lived in southeast WI my entire life.

My academic interests are bifurcated between political science and mathematics. Much of my undergraduate research in political science involved testing relationships between "diversity" and levels of efficacy of political institutions. In other words, I am interested in explaining the exclusion of underrepresented people in political institutions. For example, Germany is largely considered "not a nation of immigrants," and there are aspects of Germany's political culture that tend toward excluding immigrants from political institutions. In seeming antithesis, the United States is considered a nation of immigrants, and to a large extent representation at the national level is much more proportional than in Germany.

It would be remiss to not mention my interest in political philosophy. I greatly enjoyed reading and conducting research about Nietzsche, Aristotle, and Rousseau, though of course my background is more extensive than those three authors. In particular, the generation of morality and notions of nationalism, together with justifications of political exclusion, relate deeply to my interests.

I am also interested in "minority representation" and so-called levels of democracy, "diversity" and voter turnout, diversity and civil war end types, and human rights considered in the context of political movements (e.g. the revolutions of 1989 in Eastern Europe— in particular, the lasting impacts upon Ukraine and the Czech Republic and Slovakia).

In mathematics, I am interested, at base, in its pure forms. I enjoy the challenge and rigor of the discipline, and I have deep respect for its foundational relationship with all other sciences. My tentative research focus will be analysis in general, though harmonic/Fourier analysis has proved motivating for my continued enjoyment in mathematics. I intend to pursue a Ph.D.
